Shamsie's contemporary retelling of Antigone follows a British Pakistani family torn apart when one son joins ISIS and the state, embodied by a Muslim Home Secretary, strips citizenship and denies burial.
The novel of the surveillance state and citizenship as conditional, structured in five voices.
Content note: radicalization, terrorism, grief; a scene some Muslim readers find offensive.
