Generosity usually means giving something you have. Weil is describing giving something you are. Attention costs what money never does — it cannot be delegated, stockpiled, or spent twice. Which is why we guard it so badly, and why being truly attended to is so rare that people remember it for years.
Weil wrote this in a letter, not an essay. The line most quoted from her was never published in her lifetime.
